Located by the sea between the beaches of São Conrado
and Barra, Pedra da Gávea (Gavea's Rock) shoots up 2762 ft (842
m). One of the most peculiar rock formations in Rio, the Northeast face
has the shape of a sphinx, and holds a very interesting route called travessia
dos Olhos (Eyes Passage). The east face also has some beautiful climbs
like the Aquarius Wall with its 10 pitches, 5.10d.
There is also the option of taking a 2 hour trek through the forest to
get to this beautiful summit.
Agulhinha da Gávea (Gavea's Needle) is a small and
beautiful mountain located inside the Tijuca's Forest. Routes with three
to six pitches long, rating between 5.5
and 5.11b, this is a nice climbing area, specially in the summer.
The environment around is very, very green. It's not so rare to see wild
monkeys and exotic birds around.
A short trail connects this small summit to a hand gliding
ramp. It's possible to combine the two amazing activites in a single day.
From the ramp, a certified professional guide leads the climber in an
amazing tandem flight over the forest, São Conrado district, Pepino
beach and close to Pedra da Gávea huge walls. The golden finish
is the coconut's water at São Conrado beach, which the climber
may enjoy over the rest of the day.
